Goal

The goal of the White Ribbon Campaign is to bring awareness to men and women around issues of women and violence during national Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Purpose

The purpose of the Campaign is to engage individuals, as follows, in:

  • Learning to identify, and seek help around, violence against women
  • Analyzing how certain attitudes and behaviors may contribute to violence against women
  • Rebuking jokes and sexist language against women
  • Supporting women and women’s organizations, for example, rape crisis centers, domestic violence shelters, violence treatment programs, and other similar agencies

Background

The Campaign (http://www.whiteribbon.ca/about_us/) is an international venue with a focus on men's efforts to stop violence against women. Launched by a group of men in 1991 in response to the murders of 14 women by a male student at Montreal University in Canada, the Campaign prompts men to wear a white ribbon and participate in violence-prevention activities to strengthen and expand the network of programs dedicated to involving men in promoting gender equality and enabling them to demonstrate their commitment to ending men's violence against women.

Facts and Figures

1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in their lifetime (National Coalition Against Domestic Violence)
85% of victims of domestic violence are women (NCADV)
92% of victims of sexual assault and rape are women (National Center for Victims of Crime)
98% of perpetrators of rape and sexual assault are men (NCVC)

Justice Bureau of Justice)
